Cermaq deploys new non-chemical sea lice tool in Chile

The company signed an agreement for the use of the tool, developed by Sea Farm Innovations.

Cermaq Chile will start using a non-medical anti-sea lice tool developed by Sea Farm Innovations (SFI), the company said.

The new delousing tool is a mechanical system built around SFI’s patented flushing system, which removes the sea lice from the salmon and simultaneously collects it to be filtered from the water.

The tool will be available in Chile from July.

The treatment itself only lasts for approximately 0.2 seconds per fish and is effective against both mobile and adult sea lice.

“We know that the sea lice situation in Chile is challenging, and we need to expand our toolbox to remain in control,” said Harald Takle, R&D manager farming technology with Cermaq Group.

“SFI have come up with a very interesting concept that safeguards the welfare of the fish and at the same time is both flexible and easy to operate.”
