China lifts ban on Norwegian salmon imports

The country opens up for the three Norwegian regions that were still banned from exporting salmon to China.

China lifted an import ban on salmon coming from Norway’s northern regions Sor-Trondelag, Troms, and Nordland, which have a total production of 500,000 metric tons of salmon a year, reports Global Times.

China lifted a ban on Norwegian seafood in November last year, but maintained a ban on imports from these regions over fears of disease.

Sigmund Bjorgo, director of the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) mainland China and Hong Kong, said the lifting of the ban is "big news" for Norway.

He expects Norwegian salmon exports to China to treble in the second half of 2018 to reach a total of 21,000 metric tons.
